A couple of weeks ago, I signed up for an evening "Low Tide Walk" on the beach with The Salish Sea School here in Anacortes.
At the bottom of the registration page was the option to make a donation when you signed up.
Even though it was a free walk, I gave $10. Now I’m a donor. A small one, but a donor.

If someone gets out of bed on a Saturday morning to attend your event, or like me, knows that I’d be standing in the cold evening rain on a slimy cobble beach to explore tide pools, hey, the motivation is certainly already there. Why not ask?
You might not raise a huge amount upfront. But you’ll pick up first-time trial donors. And that’s a pretty huge signal that someone is connected with your mission.
BTW, they canceled the beach walk at the last minute. Too cold, too rainy, too dark, they said. I still totally would have gone.
I'm curious about how nonprofit orgs are using automations for donor relations.
If you're a team member at a nonprofit, I'd love for you to take my survey: Automation & the Donor Journey 2026.
